Recommended Itineraries

ButterfliesAppreciating the form, color and beauty of butterflies in their native habitat is a fascinating experience. One can do this in many parts of the country, in a wide variety of ecosystems. What follows is a selection of recommended routes and areas, organized by Department. Good luck in your search!

Tumbes: Tumbes National Forest on the route to the El Caucho guard station, to the east of the city of Tumbes. Lima to Tumbes by air: 1 hour 45 minutes.

Piura: the Canchaque–Huancabamba route. Lima to Piura by air: 1 hour 30 minutes.

Cajamarca: between Jaén and San Ignacio; also around the city of Cajamarca.

Ancash: Huascarán National Park (Llanganuco sector).

Lima: Pantanos de Villa and Bosque de Zárate (between Matucana and Ticlio).

Arequipa: Aguada Blanca National Reserve. Lima to Arequipa by air: 1 hour 20 minutes.

San Martín: the Moyobamba–Rioja–Tarapoto–Yurimaguas route*. Lima to Tarapoto by air: 1 hour 10 minutes.

Huánuco: Tingo María National Park (Las Lechuzas Cave)* and the Chinchao–Tingo María–La Diviloria route.

Pasco: the Oxapampa–Huancabamba–Pozuzo route*.

Ayacucho: Pampas Galeras National Reserve and the Ayacucho–Apurímac River route. Lima to Ayacucho by air: 50 minutes.

Cusco: Machu Picchu National Sanctuary*, the Cusco–Paucartambo–Pillopata–Atalaya and Cusco–Urcos–Quincemil routes. Lima to Cusco by air: 1 hour 10 minutes.

Puno: Lake Titicaca.

Loreto: the outskirts of Iquitos (numerous lodges)*; also the Iquitos–Nauta route. Lima to Iquitos by air: 1 hour 40 minutes.

Ucayali: Boquerón del Padre Abad (west of Aguaytía), Laguna Yarinacocha, Atalaya, and Puerto Esperanza (Purús River). Lima to Pucallpa by air: 1 hour 5 minutes.

Madre de Dios*: various wilderness lodges on the Tambopata, Madre de Dios, Alto Madre de Dios and Manu rivers; also the Puerto Maldonado–Iberia–Inapari route. Lima–Cusco–Puerto Maldonado by air: 2 hours 30 minutes.
